Q: What exactly does Chirp block? How does it decide what’s harmful?

Chirp is designed to detect and block messages, content, and searches that may be harmful such as cyberbullying, compromising imagery that could lead to sexual grooming, or searches for self-harm and suicide-related content. Chirp works at the Android operating system level so it doesn’t rely on specific apps or downloads on your child’s phone; and it cannot be uninstalled by children. If something is blocked, your child will see a message explaining what happened, and you’ll get a notification.

Q: How do I get help if something isn’t working?

Q: I haven’t received any Chirp notifications. Does that mean it’s not working?

Not at all. In many cases, no alerts is actually a good sign; it just means your child hasn’t encountered anything potentially harmful that Chirp needs to filter or block. Chirp works quietly in the background and only steps in when it detects something harmful. If you’re ever unsure, feel free to email us and we can confirm everything is functioning as expected.

Q: My child asked, “Why did a message get blocked?” What should I say?

To explain to your child, you might say something like: “ Chirp is there to help keep you safe. Sometimes it blocks messages that could be upsetting or harmful, even if it’s not always obvious why. If it ever blocks something by mistake, tell me and we can look at it together and perhaps let the Chirp team know also. ”

Q: Can my child keep the phone number after the pilot ends?

Yes. The SIM and phone number will remain active after the pilot. After June 30th, 2026 you will be obliged to pay for the SIM usage. If you ever decide to switch to a different network later, you’re welcome to do that—but you’ll need to arrange the changeover yourself (e.g., porting the number).
